I take things out of context; I might forever

I am out of context and you do not have a place to put me. You say I’m

wonderful. I blush but

cannot believe you; I spent too much time trying

how can I not shy from repetition—

how can it be true when it was true the last time? I have

to say something new, I cannot because things that were

past truths have faded into lies, tossed away in worn buckets for

winter storage. Those words are true for you

like they never were before but I cannot say them

it is desecration to what I believed (back then)

when you say you love me and I say it back

I want you to know that it is not repetition, there is not a pressure to respond akin

no need to move to your movements but a truth of its own

a power that has not lessened potency

I want to say I love you a thousand different ways

like Neutral Milk Hotel and flannel shirts

like coffee and tea and sunshine and rainy days and those foggy fall

evenings of leaves and smoke in the air

the first time I checked a book by T.S. Eliot out of the library

I love you like I love the first record I ever bought and the second Beatles song I ever heard and the third short story in my first-favorite anthology

I love you like pure and simple truths that do not even require question I love you

the way I cried when she played “Sunday Shoes” and just how I stood up to dance

at the blind pilot concert, affirmation of something

I love you like I love being alive and being right here

I love you like saying it a million times I love you I love you I love you Iloveyoulikewhipsersblendtogetherinmyears

like how I love the moment when my head is a spiderweb of sleep closing around my eyelids and I can still say soft towards the phone pulsing warm against my ear

I love you like New York and like Portland and Detriot and like how Philadelphia is home and like Michigan is and like the sands by the lake, I love you like mica and petoskey and slate and cherry blossoms

I love you like I love pictures of space and poems by someone I don’t know and I love you like I love owls and flowers and Danish houses and Scottish ballads

I love you like I love Iceland.

And I love you different from all those things too, and the way your eyes are slow and your freckles delicate across your nose; like it would be a sin to call you hot or attractive or sexy or handsome when you are, absolutely, beautiful

I pray (to any god) that something will keep this belief alive, that I will love completely every time, that this thing will not die, cannot die, because I could be crushed by your leaving but I could not stand to watch your heart crumble.
